A blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is a popular plastic surgery with both men and women. During this procedure, excess fatty deposits and skin are removed, so that the eyes look rested and youthful. The procedure can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both. Recovery for an eyelid lift surgery takes about three weeks, but there are many things you can do to prepare for the post-operative period so that your recovery goes as smoothly as possible. You will have a comprehensive pre-surgery consultation, during which you will receive personalized preparation instructions. Here are some tips that will help you prepare for an easy recovery.ย
Quit Smoking
If you smoke, Dr. Maloney will ask you to stop at least three weeks before your procedureโthough quitting six to eight weeks in advance is even better. People who smoke tend to have circulation issues that cause slow wound healing. Smokers also have increased risks of surgical and post-surgical complications. If you need assistance in breaking the habit, ask for recommendation during your consultation or check with your primary care doctor.ย
Get the Supplies You Need
After surgery, you may need prescription or OTC pain medication and ice packs to help reduce your swelling. You may also need to take stool softeners, as pain medications lead to constipation. Stock up on food that is easy to prepare and that will be gentle on your stomach, especially in the few days immediately after your procedure.ย
Arrange for Help
You will need someone to drive you to and from your surgery and preferably to stay with you the day of your procedure. You will have steri-strips around your eyes that you should keep in place until your doctor tells you to remove them. Sleep with your pillows propped up to reduce swelling and get up to move around frequently to reduce the risk of blood clots. Bruising is normal and should clear up in a few weeks.ย
