What is a mommy makeover and when is it recommended?
WHAT IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER
A Mommy Makeover is a highly individualized combination of cosmetic surgery procedures that is tailored to your goals and preferences. Dr. Maloney will work closely with you to understand your goals and help you determine which procedures are right for you. The procedures you choose can address loose skin and excess fat on the abdomen, tighten the abdominal muscles, and reshape the breasts to give them a more youthful appearance. Oftentimes, liposuction is performed at the same time for better contouring of the body. Every patient is unique. Therefore, a Mommy Makeover is not the same for each patient.
Why Consider a Mommy Makeover Procedure?
You might consider this procedure after you have had children and finished breastfeeding. The specific combination of cosmetic surgery procedures you choose, can address areas of your body that were affected by aging, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, such as your stomach, hips, butt, breasts, and thighs. If you have tried and struggled to lose weight or tone your body after pregnancy or have stubborn areas of fat or loose or sagging skin, a Mommy Makeover might be right for you.
What Cosmetic Surgery Procedures are Included?
A Mommy Makeover can be customized to your specific goals and can include any combination of these procedures:
- Breast augmentation – A breast augmentation uses breast implants or a fat transfer procedure to enhance the fullness, size, and symmetry of your breasts.
- Breast lift – A breast lift can raise the position of your breasts and reduce sagging, making your breasts firmer, perkier, and more youthful looking.
- Tummy tuck – A tummy tuck procedure can address stubborn areas of fat and loose skin on your stomach or abdomen.
- Liposuction – Liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat on the stomach, love handles, and thighs.
Understanding the Benefits and Risks
After a Mommy Makeover, your abdomen will be flatter, and tighter with the extra skin and fat removed. The size, shape, and overall appearance of your breasts will be enhanced. You may have improved confidence and self-esteem, and feel like your clothes fit you better.Â
Like all cosmetic surgery procedures, a Mommy Makeover can have health risks. Dr. Maloney will make sure you fully understand these risks so that you can decide if this procedure is right for you. The most common complications or risks of these cosmetic surgery procedures are slow wound healing, scarring, infection, breast asymmetry, excessive firmness of the breasts, changes in skin sensation, changes in nipple or breast sensation, and capsular contracture. For a full list of risks, go to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website. Â
What to Expect at Your Consultation with Dr. Maloney
When you come in for your initial consultation, you will meet with both Dr. Maloney and one of our clinical coordinators. One of the first things we will do at your consultation is use VECTRA imaging technology to take a 3D image of your body from the bellybutton to the neck. After VECTRA imaging, Dr. Maloney will examine you to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery.Â
Once you have met with Dr. Maloney, one of our experienced coordinators, will review surgical fees, financing options and answer any other additional questions you may have. If you choose to have surgery with Dr. Maloney, you will return for another consultation about three weeks prior to your operation to go over the final details.

How is a Mommy Makeover Performed?
A Mommy Makeover can take between four and eight hours, depending on what procedures are being performed. The anesthesiologist will put you to sleep for this operation for your safety and comfort. Dr. Maloney will make an incision roughly from hip bone to hip bone across your abdomen, just above your pubic hairline. The excess fatty tissue will be removed, your abdominal muscles tightened, and a new hole made for your belly button. The excess skin will be pulled tight and sutured into place.
Dr. Maloney will remove the excess skin and reposition the breast tissue. If you are having a breast augmentation, he will create an incision on the underside of your breast and create a pocket large enough for the implants. You will wake up in the recovery room with surgical drains placed and in a compression garment. You will be ready to go home in about an hour.
Recovery Time and Results of a Mommy Makeover
We asked that you arrange a ride to and from the surgery center, as well as arrange for someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours. You should take one to three weeks off work to recover and have a spouse or family member ready to assist with childcare during your recovery.
You should take all pain medication and antibiotics as prescribed throughout your recovery. Using bags of frozen peas or corn can work as ice packs to relieve pain and swelling and stay hydrated, and you may need to take a stool softener.
We recommend you wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and bruising after surgery. There may have some drainage of fluid from the incisions, especially if liposuction is performed at the same time. You should rest and eat a healthy diet high in protein to assist your body with healing. We recommend early and frequent ambulation after surgery to reduce the risk of blood clot formation in the legs and to speed up your recovery.
You may be stiff and sore when you first get up and walk around, you may be swollen after surgery, and you may walk hunched over for a few days. It takes about six to 10 weeks to see your full results, so be patient during the healing process. You will need to record the amount of fluid your drains are collecting.
