What is a Medium Depth Chemical Peel and when is it recommended?

What is a Medium Depth Chemical Peel?

A medium depth chemical peel is a skin care treatment that removes the upper layers of dead, dry, and dull skin cells from your face. A treatment penetrates the skin to a depth of 0.45-0.60mm. This process restores healthy, new skin and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. This is a professional-grade exfoliation skin treatment. It reduces the appearance of dull, dry skin, reduces pore size and leaves your face soft, smooth and radiant.

Who Should Consider a Medium Depth Chemical Face Peel?

You should consider a medium depth chemical peel for wrinkles, sun spots, age spots, acne scars, and other moderate skin concerns. It offers more advanced results than a micropeel or superficial chemical peel. We recommend these treatments be used as part of a long-term skin maintenance routine to enhance the look, feel and texture of your skin and these are appropriate for all skin types. This treatment uses different chemical solutions or a combination of chemical solutions depending on the skin issue we are correcting. We might recommend this treatment if you have:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Acne scars
  • Uneven or rough skin texture
  • Moderate to deep wrinkles
  • Dull or dry skin

Medium Depth Chemical Peel Benefits and Risks

These treatments remove the dead and dull surface layers of the skin, stimulating an increase in collagen production and rejuvenation. Many patients see improvements in the tone, texture, and color of treated areas when a series of treatments are performed. It can also improve oily or dull skin, enlarged pores, clogged pores, fine lines, deep wrinkles, acne scars, and moderate complexion problems. The biggest benefits are:

  • Smoother skin
  • Increased collagen and elastin production
  • More supple, youthful looking skin
  • Reduced appearance of acne scars, sun damage, age spots, fine lines, and deep wrinkles
  • Minimized pores
  • Rejuvenated and refreshed appearance

Complications from medium depth chemical peels are extremely rare, but could include skin infections, cold sores, allergic reactions, undesirable color changes and scarring.

What to Expect at Your Chemical Peel Consultation

At your chemical peel consultation, you will meet with one of our experienced skin care specialists. They will discuss your skincare goals, your current skincare regimen, and your current skin issues to determine if a series of medium depth chemical peels are right for you. We may use Vectra 3D imaging to allow you and your skincare expert to view sun damage, broken capillaries, and other skin issues. The results will serve as a baseline. After completing a series of treatments and maintaining a custom home skincare regimen, we can evaluate the improvements in the quality of your skin.

How is a Medium Depth Chemical Peel Treatment Performed?

This procedure is a four-step skincare treatment:

Cleansing – Your skin care expert will clean your face and prepare the chemical solutions for application.

Apply solution – Your provider will apply one to several layers of the chemical solution to your face.

Wait time – We will wait a few minutes for the solution to interact with your skin. Often a fan is used to cool the face and decrease the odor from the chemical interaction with the skin cells.

Cooling compresses – We will apply cool compresses to soothe your skin and relieve stinging or burning. We will then clean your skin again and apply moisturizer and/or sunscreen.

How to Prepare for a Medium Depth Chemical Peel for Face

We will give you specific, personalized instructions for preparing for a treatment. You should not be currently using Accutane® and have not used it within the last 12 months. Your skin should be free of an active herpes infection, open wounds, or skin infections. You should avoid sun exposure for the two weeks prior to your appointment. We also recommend that you hydrate properly before your appointment and avoid using exfoliants, Retin-A, or glycolic acids. You should also avoid shaving or waxing your skin, using tanning beds, smoking, or drinking alcohol.

Medium Depth Chemical Peel Recovery Time and Results

During the medium depth chemical peel, you may feel a slight stinging or burning sensation. After the treatment, your skin may be red and shiny for up to 48 hours. Your face may feel warm like a sunburn. Your skin will begin to peel in two to three days and continue for four to five days. Do not pick at the peeling skin or aggressively exfoliate. You should not use products containing Retin-A® or Glycolic acid for three days following the treatment. You should avoid the gym, saunas, pools, and hot tubs for at least 48 hours. You may have a one to two week recovery period; however, redness or pinkness may last for a few months.

The results will start out subtle, but will increase over time. Once you have undergone several chemical peel treatments, you will start to see more obvious results.
