What is Sciton ProFractional Laser Resurfacing and when is it recommended?

What is ProFractional Laser Resurfacing?

ProFractional laser resurfacing is a safe, minimally invasive way to rejuvenate and restore the appearance of the face. The laser creates microscopic channels in the skin without damaging surrounding tissues. This process stimulates the growth of collagen, which is a protein that enhances the firmness and texture of the skin. The Sciton laser allows us to make highly precise adjustments to the depth, pattern, and heat input of the laser. Recovery times are also significantly less than the older CO2 lasers because the erbium laser uses a different wavelength that does not cause as much damage to the surrounding tissue.

Who Should Consider Facial Laser Treatments?

ProFractional laser resurfacing is ideal for people who are healthy overall and who have aging skin and hard-to-treat skin conditions that are affecting their confidence or self-esteem. Our Sciton ProFractional laser can treat:

  • Fine lines and deep wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Scarring
  • Discoloration
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Freckles
  • Actinic keratosis

Understanding the Benefits of Sciton ProFractional Laser Resurfacing

The Sciton ProFractional Laser offers incredible results with minimal downtime. While CO2 lasers and ProFractional lasers perform similar procedures, the fractionated erbium laser only removes parts of the skin in microscopic channels. This ensures no surrounding tissues are damaged, which accelerates the healing process and reduces the risk of complications. We can treat small areas at a time to reduce downtime and recovery time and achieve dramatic results that improve the tone, texture, and appearance of your skin. These treatments also stimulate collagen production, reduce the appearance of scars, and reduce or eliminate sun spots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, and actinic keratosis.

Benefits of Facial Laser Treatments

Most people find that the benefits of laser resurfacing outweigh the risks. The biggest benefits are:

  • Fast results within two weeks of the treatment
  • Continued improvement for up to six months due to increased collagen production
  • Improved skin tone
  • Refined and smoother skin texture
  • Minimized pores
  • Reduced appearance of scars
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles
  • Tighter and firmer skin
  • Younger looking skin
  • Brighter skin
  • Reduced appearance of sunspots and sun damage
  • Reduced hyperpigmentation or discoloration
  • Improved confidence and self-esteem

Risks of Facial Laser Treatments

Like any cosmetic or medical procedure, facial laser treatments have risks. The most common complications of laser skin resurfacing treatments are:

  • Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
  • Acne
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Herpes outbreak

What to Expect from a Laser Face Treatment Consultation

When you come in for your initial laser face treatment consultation, you will meet with one of our Certified Medical Laser Technicians. One of the first things we will do at your consultation is use VECTRA imaging technology to take 3D images of your face. VECTRA imaging allows us to see the pigment that lies deeper in the skin, so that we can create your treatment plan.
We will go over the details of the procedure, show you before-and-after photos, and answer any questions you have. Our certified medical laser technicians will then review treatment expectations and pre- and post-treatment instructions.

Meet Dr Maloney

Dr. Maloney is a Harvard trained, board certified plastic surgeon who returned to his home town of Tucson, AZ to open Maloney Plastic Surgery in 2002.

Preparing for Skin Laser Treatments

Before we schedule your treatment, you will need to meet with one of our certified medical laser technicians to determine if you are a good candidate. We will ask you to avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks prior to your treatment, and we may recommend pre-treatment with hydroquinone for three or four weeks if you have a history of hyperpigmentation. Please let our certified medical laser technician know if you have a history of cold sores, as we may also need to prescribe a pre-treatment course of antiviral medication.

Skin Laser Treatments Procedure

How is Skin Laser Resurfacing Performed?

Laser skin resurfacing is an outpatient procedure. We ask you to arrive with a clean face free from makeup, and skin care products like lotions, serums, gels, or creams. Initially, we will clean your face and apply a topical numbing medication. You will sit in our treatment room for 30 minutes, while we wait for the numbing cream to take effect. We will apply protective eye covers over your eyes to protect them from the laser. The procedure may take about an hour. During treatment, we use a cryo air chilling device to cool your skin and reduce discomfort. After the laser procedure, we will apply cool compresses and Aquaphor to your skin to relieve redness, pain, and discomfort.

What to Expect After Face Laser Treatments

Full recovery can take one to two weeks. You should apply Aquaphor to your skin for 48–72 hours to prevent drying and discomfort. We recommend vinegar soaks three or four times per day for the first 48–72 hours, as vinegar has antibacterial and antifungal properties and can reduce itching and discomfort. You may wash your face with a mild cleanser each day, and your face will be red or pink for seven to 10 days. It is recommended that you avoid exfoliation and harsh skin care products and procedures for at least four weeks. We will schedule a follow-up appointment within one to three weeks with one of our certified medical laser technicians, at which point we will let you know if you can resume the use of your regular skin care products.
