Learn About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are any type of injectable medical-grade solution that has cosmetic benefits or results. Depending on the type of filler you choose, and where the injection is administered, you might see different results. They can be injected in the area around the eyes, mouth, and nose, as well as in the forehead, cheeks, neck, and chest. The results you get, and how long they last, might depend on the brand of lip fillers, cheek fillers, and chin fillers you choose.

Dermal filler injections are non-surgical and minimally invasive, but are incredibly effective at smoothing fine lines, filling in deep wrinkles and folds, and restoring volume in hollowed or sunken skin. Many show almost immediate results, and these results can often last for months or even years. When you come in for a consultation, our team will discuss your options so we can choose the right ones for you. We will factor in several important things in making that decision: your age, overall health, medical conditions, prior cosmetic or surgical procedures, your goals, the severity of the condition you want to treat, and your long-term needs.

Determine if You’re a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers

When you come in for a consultation, we’ll determine if you’re a good candidate. We will go over your medical history, past cosmetic, surgical, and elective procedures, overall lifestyle, and goals.

You might be a good candidate if you:

  • Are physically healthy overall.
  • Are not pregnant.
  • Don’t have a history of cold sores.
  • Are not breastfeeding.
  • Don’t have any neurological disorders.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Don’t drink excessively.
  • Are committed to effective and consistent sun protection.

Learn More about Lip Fillers, Cheek Fillers, & Chin Fillers

Three of the most common dermal fillers we administer are lip fillers, cheek fillers, and chin fillers. Here’s a look at what each one can do for you:

  • Lip fillers – Lip fillers are used to add volume to the lips to make them plumper, change their shape or overall appearance, and improve symmetry. If you have lost volume in your lips due to aging, genetics, or smoking, lip fillers can counteract the effect. Lip fillers can take up to 30-45 minutes to administer and can last between 12-18 months. Results are best seen in 24-48 hours when swelling has gone down.
  • Cheek fillers – Cheek fillers can significantly fight the signs of aging, such as hollow or sunken areas of the face. They can also be used to give the face a more symmetrical or pleasing appearance. Cheek fillers can take around 15-30 minutes to administer. You should see results immediately and experience minimal side effects. Results can last between six months and two years.
  • Chin fillers – Chin fillers are injections that are used to tighten the skin area around the chin and shape the size and appearance of the chin. Chin fillers can take up to 30 minutes to administer and can last from 9-12 months. Results are usually immediate, with minimal pain or side effects.

What are the benefits and risks of Dermal Fillers?

Discover What Dermal Fillers Can Do for You

The naturally-occurring substance in your body that is responsible for plump, youthful skin is collagen. As you age, your body produces less and less collagen. This eventually affects your skin, muscles, bones, and connective tissues. A lack of sufficient collagen production can make your skin loose, dull, hollow, recessed, thin, sagging, and wrinkled.
Dermal filler injections can be used almost anywhere on the body to fight the body’s loss of collagen. They can be used for:

  • Enhancing volume in hollow areas around the eyes, mouth, and neck.
  • Improving the symmetry of your facial features.
  • Plumping lips, cheeks, and neck to fight signs of aging or sudden weight loss.
  • Reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and deep folds.
  • Enhancing or improving the natural size and shape of your cheeks, jaw, chin, or lips.

Be Aware of the Risks of Dermal Fillers

The risks associated with dermal fillers are rare, but you should be aware of them. Most people only experience minor, temporary discomfort during and after an injection. These temporary side effects might include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling or inflammation
  • Redness
  • Tenderness or pain
  • Itching or rash
  • Hot skin

Severe complications are rare, but could include:

  • Acne-like skin eruptions
  • Necrosis
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Asymmetry
  • Palpability of injection material under skin

Prepare for a Dermal Filler Consultation

When you come in and meet with us for your consultation, we’ll ask you some questions about your health history and overall health. You should bring in information about your general health, medical conditions, past surgeries, past elective or cosmetic procedures, and current medications you’re on. We will also need to know if you have any allergies or have ever had a bad reaction to medications, fillers, or any other kind of procedure.

You will meet with one of our injectors: Jeanne Bernstein, RN, or Danielle Mose, PA-C. She will do an examination of your face, skin, and any other area where you’re considering fillers. She will go over in detail how they can or can’t fix areas that you’re concerned with, outline the potential risks and complications, and give you information on alternative treatments. You can ask any questions you have so that you can make an informed decision about your health. If we determine you’re a good candidate for dermal fillers, you can either have the procedure done the same day, or schedule it for a later date and time.

Preparing for your procedure

Understand the Procedure for Dermal Fillers

When you visit us for dermal fillers, we’ll fully explain what to expect so that you won’t have any surprises. After the initial consultation, we’ll complete a facial assessment and mapping. This will help us point out to you specifically where the fillers will be injected. We will then fully clean, sanitize, and anesthetize the skin and injection sites.

Next, we will inject each site with a small, sterile needle. Each injection will take less than a minute. We will massage the skin afterwards and evaluate the results. Depending on the size of the treatment area, the results of your injections, and the number of areas to be treated, the procedure can take between 15 minutes to one hour.

When we’re done, we will clean off all markings. We can give you an ice pack to reduce swelling, and we’ll give you post-injection instructions.

Know What to Expect Before, During, & After Your Visit

We want our patients to be informed of every step during the process of getting dermal fillers. We will go over what you can expect before, during, and after your appointment. This includes post-injection care and warning signs to watch out for.

Here’s a brief look at what we’ll discuss:

Before dermal fillers

We will do a full consultation with you to determine if you’re a good candidate. We may recommend that in the week leading up to lip filler injections, you stop taking any over the counter blood thinning medications like aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, and Aleve. We will also ask you to avoid taking any supplements like St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, or Vitamin E. In the day or two before injection, we recommend you not use topical products that contain tretinoin, retinal, retinoids, glycolic acid, or anti-aging ingredients. You also shouldn’t drink any alcohol.

During dermal filler injection

You should arrive with a clean face that is washed and makeup free. We will tell you what to expect before we begin administering injections. We will clean and sterilize the skin and use a new, sterile needle. We only use medical-grade, FDA-approved dermal fillers. We will check in with you throughout the procedure to see how you’re feeling.

After dermal fillers

We may provide you with an ice pack and/or topical Arnica. We recommend that you take acetaminophen as needed for pain or inflammation. We recommend that you avoid itching, massaging, or picking at your skin. Avoid putting intense heat on the injected area, and don’t suntan, sunbathe, or use a tanning bed, sauna, hot tub, or hot wax. You can take antihistamine to lessen swelling. You should wear sunscreen every day and use a gentle cleanser on your skin. You should avoid strenuous exercise or drinking alcohol. Please watch for warning signs of complications, including: fever, chills, discolored blotches in untreated areas, blanching of injection site, red or hot injection site, severe or increasing pain, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, intense fatigue, hot flashes, or any symptoms that don’t go away within three days.
