What are Superficial Chemical Peels for the Face?
A superficial chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure that removes the outer layer of your skin. Unlike medium depth chemical and deep chemical peels, it is most effective on minor to moderate skin concerns, and doesn’t require an extensive recovery period.Â
Dr. Maloney and our skin care specialists offer highly customized treatments that are targeted to meet your needs. We will fully customize the chemicals used, and the skin care products used after your peel to address your specific skin concerns.
Who Should Consider a Superficial Chemical Face Peel?
You should consider this procedure if you have mild to moderate skin concerns that are making you feel self-conscious. It can offer lasting relief of numerous skin concerns and can reduce or eliminate signs of aging. We recommend using a superficial peel as part of your skin care maintenance routine to enhance the natural beauty of your skin and remove dull, dead, dry, and flaky skin. This treatment can address:
- Dry, flaky, and dull skin
- Fine lines and mild wrinkles
- Acne and mild acne scars
- Uneven skin tone
- Pigmentation
- Rough skin
Benefits and Risks of a Chemical Peel for the Face
Superficial chemical peels for the face remove the dead and dull surface layers of the skin, stimulating an increase in collagen production. They can restore and rejuvenate your face, making it appear clearer, healthier, and younger. Many patients see improvements in the tone, texture, and color of treated areas when a series of treatments are performed. They can also improve oily or dull skin and address enlarged pores, clogged pores, fine lines, and mild complexion problems. You will feel more confident once the results are achieved.
Complications are extremely rare, but could include skin infections, cold sores, allergic reactions, undesirable color changes and scarring.
What to Expect at Your Chemical Peel Treatment Consultation
At a consultation, one of our experienced skin care specialists will discuss your skin care goals, your current skin care regimen, and your current skin concerns. They will determine this procedure is right for you and your skin. We use Vectra 3D imaging to view sun damage, broken capillaries, and other skin concerns. These images serve as a baseline for comparison as we evaluate the results. They will also help us plan your aesthetic program and determine which chemicals to use in your treatment and which skin care products to use afterwards. After completing a series of treatments and sticking to a consistent at-home skin care regimen, we can evaluate improvements in the quality of your skin.
Meet Dr Maloney
How is a Superficial Chemical Peel Treatment Performed?
During a superficial chemical peel for the face, we apply chemicals to the skin to address specific skin concerns you have. We recommend that you arrive with a clean face without makeup, skin products, lotions, or perfumes. Your skin care specialist will clean your face and apply several layers of the customized chemical solution to your face. You should not experience any pain or discomfort, though you might feel a slight warmth. We will use a fan to cool your face during the procedure. After the treatment is rinsed off using a neutralizing solution, we will apply a specific combination of skin care products to your face.
Recovery Time and Results for Superficial Chemical Peels
After a superficial chemical peel, your skin might be tight, shiny, pink, irritated, and dry for up to two days. Your skin will begin slowly flaking off in two or three days and may continue to flake for four or five days. You should avoid picking at the dry skin or using abrasive or exfoliating products on your skin. You should not use products containing Retin-A® or Glycolic acid for three days following the treatment. You should avoid the gym, saunas and hot tubs for 48 hours.
You should see your final results in one or two weeks. You will notice improved skin texture and tone, fewer fine lines and mild wrinkles, and smoother, brighter, and healthier looking skin. You should schedule another in four or five weeks.
