Breast augmentation has been among the top plastic surgeries for women for decades, but the results of this popular surgery can vary significantly depending on your surgeon and the approach they use for your procedure. At Maloney Plastic Surgery, you can feel confident in your care knowing that Dr. Maloney is a Harvard-trained plastic surgeon who has been practicing for more than 20 years.
The decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery is a highly personal one, but Dr. Maloney and his team can walk you through the benefits, risks, and results you can expect under our care.
Is Breast Augmentation Right for You?
Women choose to get breast implants for a variety of reasons. If you are unhappy with the shape, size, or symmetry of your breasts, surgery may be the right choice to enhance your curves and improve your overall silhouette. Some common patient goals for breast augmentation surgery include:
- Changing the size and appearance of your breasts.
- Improving breast symmetry.
- Increasing the size and restoring the appearance of your breasts after pregnancy or weight loss.
- Improving the size and appearance of breasts that didn’t fully develop due to congenital issues, illness, or other factors.
- Restoring breasts after a mastectomy.
- Improving your overall confidence and self-esteem.

Get to Know the Art and Science of Breast Implant Placement
When you are considering breast augmentation, Dr. Maloney will walk you through the different choices for types of breast implants, implant placement, and surgical techniques. This will help you visualize your results and understand the different choices you have for your surgery.
Types of Breast Implants
- Saline implants
Saline implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with sterile saline. These implants are empty when Dr. Maloney places them in the pocket. They are then filled to the appropriate volume. These implants are most popular in women who are looking for an overfilled, round appearance to their breasts.
- Silicone implants
Silicone implants are composed of a silicone shell, filled with cohesive silicone gel. The gel implants are the most popular implants in the market today. Unlike their predecessors, the new generation of highly cohesive gel implants can literally be cut in half, and the gel will remain in place. Placement of the silicone gel implants gives you a soft, natural look and feel to the breasts.
Choosing the Right Implant Size
Many patients ask about the different profiles of implants and when each should be used. The most important measurement we take at your consultation is the measurement of the base diameter or width of your breasts.
Once Dr. Maloney has taken this measurement and discussed your goals, he can offer you some choices of implants that would fit well into that measurement.
If you choose an implant that is wider than the base diameter, the implants may be too wide for your body and be “in your armpit”.
If you choose something too narrow, the implants do not fill out the entire breast. Low, moderate, moderate-plus, high and ultra-high profile implants allow Dr. Maloney to offer a variety of implant volumes, but they remain the same in base diameter. For example, if your base diameter is 12cm, the volume in the moderate profile implant is 235cc, the moderate plus is 300cc, the high profile is 375cc and the ultra-high profile is 535cc.
As you can see, this gives both you and Dr. Maloney several options in terms of size and volume while ensuring that the implants are suited to your natural proportions.

How Should You Prepare for Breast Augmentation?
Although breast augmentation is an outpatient surgical procedure, it still requires significant preparation and planning for recovery. Prior to surgery, you may need to make some lifestyle modifications such as adjusting current medications and supplements, quitting smoking, and avoiding certain medications. If you are above the age of 65, you may be required to get cardiac clearance before your procedure. After surgery, you will need to follow specific instructions provided by our team and have someone to help you during the first 24 hours of your recovery. You will be provided with Dr. Maloney’s personal cell phone number so that you can reach out with questions or concerns at any time.
Pre- and Post-Surgery Timeline
Your procedure will be performed at a fully accredited outpatient surgery center.
Before surgery, our team will review your personalized treatment plan, including surgical fees, scheduling options, and financing details.
