Do BroadBand Light Therapy Lasers Actually Work?

Do BroadBand Light Therapy Lasers Actually Work?

BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy is a non-invasive photo rejuvenation treatment that can address a wide range of skin problems caused by aging, sun damage, or acne. BBL yields visible changes in the skinโ€™s appearance within just a few days, and results may last up to one year. While this type of treatment may sound too good to be true, it has actually been extensively studied, showing that the results from BBL laser treatments are not just superficial.ย

At Maloney Plastic Surgery, BBL is one of many non-surgical laser procedures we offer. Learn if BBL therapy is right for you and explore your full range of laser skincare options by scheduling a consultation with one of our licensed aestheticians. Understanding BroadBand Light (BBL) Therapy

BBL therapy is a type of intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) that works by sending light energy into the skin cells. This light kicks on the regenerative processes within the skin cells, triggering increased collagen production as well as repair of damaged cells. Moreover, BBL therapy alters the expression of genes associated with the aging process, so your skin will appear more youthful and vibrant after your treatment.ย

Conditions Treated by BBL

BBL therapy can reduce the appearance of many types of age-related skin damage, including fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, dull skin, uneven skin tone and texture, and loose skin. BBL can also address damage caused by sun exposure, acne, and other skin conditions. Issues like hyperpigmentation, redness, scars, and pigmented lesions can all be reduced with BroadBand Light laser treatments.ย

BBL therapy does require several treatments to achieve optimal results. The exact number of treatments youโ€™ll need depends on your specific skin concerns, as well as your age and skin type. Generally, patients will have 3-6 initial treatments spaced 2โ€“3 weeks apart, followed by 2-4 additional treatments annually to maintain results.ย

BroadBand Light Therapy Effectivenessย

Various studies have shown that BBL therapy is effective for several common skin concerns, and that treatment is generally considered safe. A 2019 study found that 5 BBL treatments at 2-week intervals was effective for reducing enlarged pores, while a separate study the same year found that BBL treatment is effective for reducing wrinkles around the cheekbones, nasal folds, and mouth. In 2020, researchers found that BBL successfully treated age spots and prevented new lesions, while also thickening the skin and improving collagen production.ย

Here at Maloney Plastic Surgery, we have seen great results with BBL therapy for our patients.
