What is BroadBand Light Therapy and When is it Recommended?

What is BroadBand Light therapy

A photofacial is a cosmetic treatment that directs waves of light energy at areas of the skin. These high-intensity bursts of light penetrates various levels of the skin and stimulates the natural healing response of the skin cells. This allows your skin to repair damage to the skin, such as by permanently reducing or even eliminating areas of hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and even acne. BBL also improves the texture and elasticity of the skin, making it truly a “fountain of youth” of skincare treatments.

At Maloney Plastic Surgery, we are pleased to offer the Scition BBL phototherapy treatment, which is the latest and most advanced such system available on the market today.

Is a photofacial with BBL therapy right for me?

Many people with sun damage, age spots, and other areas of hyperpigmentation are good candidates for BBL treatment. This cosmetic treatment may be right for you if would like to reduce or eliminate the appearance of:

  • Red or brown spots
  • Vascular lesions
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Dull complexion
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Redness
  • Melasma
  • Rosacea
  • Acne

A photofacial is ideally suited to individuals with fair skin. It can be used on multiple areas, including the face, neck, chest, arms, and upper back. In most cases, individuals need two to four treatments at four to six week intervals for optimal results.

What are the benefits and risks of BroadBand Light Therapy?

Benefits of light therapy

Our patients love the results they see with BBL treatment! You’ll begin to see results shortly after your first treatment, with continued improvements as you receive additional treatments. You’ll love the look of more radiant, younger-looking skin as the treatments continue to minimize or eliminate the appearance of:

  • Red and brown areas of hyperpigmentation
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Dull, uneven skin
  • Vascular lesions
  • Redness
  • Acne
  • Large pores
  • Rough texture
  • Freckles

Risks of BBL Treatment

Our patients generally find that photofacials are well-tolerated. However, every procedure carries some risks, including BBL treatment. Please carefully weigh the benefits against the potential risks to determine if this treatment is right for you, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

Some risks include hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and the need for additional procedures. (Pigmentation-related risks are typically temporary.) Uncommon, but more serious risks include scarring, eye injury, and skin burning.

What happens at a light therapy/phototherapy consultation?

At Maloney Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on the thoroughness of our patient evaluation and consultation process. It’s because we prioritize the wellness, safety, and comfort of our patients. At your consultation, you’ll meet with a Certified Medical Laser technician. One of the first steps at the consult is to use VECTRA imaging technology to produce a detailed, 3D image of your face. (We are one of the only practices in Tucson, AZ to invest in this cutting-edge tech.)

The 3D image of your face reveals skin damage that may be hidden to the naked eye. We’ll use the imaging to determine if BroadBand Light therapy is right for you. It’s also useful in the treatment planning process.

This exciting technology will allow us to show you the red and brown sun damage in your skin on the 3D image. We are excited and proud to offer this amazing technology to our patients. Before you leave, you’ll get all of the details of the cosmetic treatment and you’ll be encouraged to ask any questions you may have. You’ll also get to see before-and-after photos to help you determine if you’d like to undergo the treatment.

If you do decide to move forward with a photofacial, you’ll schedule a second appointment for your treatment.

BBL PREPARATION AND PROCESS

How should I prepare for my BBL treatment session?

Preparation for light therapy/phototherapy is minimal. We do ask that you avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks prior to your appointment. Try to limit your time outdoors. When you do go outside, wear clothing that protects your skin, including a wide-brimmed hat. (And don’t forget the sunscreen!) Avoid all types of tanning activities, including tanning beds and sunless tanning lotion.

How is a photofacial performed?

Usually, a BroadBand Light therapy appointment doesn’t take long. The treatment itself may take about 30 minutes or, if you’re having an extensive area treated, perhaps up to two hours. For your safety, your eyes will be protected with eye shields and your skin will be gently treated with a cool gel.

Then, our highly trained technician will use the BBL device to direct light energy at the treatment areas. Please note that, despite the protective eye shields, you may notice a flash of light when the treatment begins. To optimize your comfort, you may use cool compresses on the treatment areas.

What should I expect after a BroadBand Light therapy treatment?

Although a BBL treatment doesn’t require any downtime, it’s best to avoid hot tubs and strenuous activity for 24 hours. Avoid sun exposure for the same length of time. During the next few days, you’ll see damaged skin turn dark and slough off. Please avoid picking at the areas of shedding skin; this is a normal part of the skin rejuvenation process. If you have any questions during the recovery phase, please call the office any time, day or night.
