What to Expect from Your Rhinoplasty Recovery

What to Expect from Your Rhinoplasty Recovery

Rhinoplasty is a surgery to transform that look of the nose. It can also improve nasal function in patients who have chronic breathing obstructions. Before having a rhinoplasty, you should understand what’s involved during the recovery process. Always defer to your plastic surgeon’s instructions if they differ from the general guidelines below.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline

Every patient’s recovery is a little different. Swelling and bruising is quite common after a rhinoplasty. This should subside within a few weeks. Your doctor may clear you to return to light activities in a five to seven days. It may be a full month before you’re cleared to do most types of exercise. Note that even after you’re considered fully healed, your nose’s new shape will continue to refine itself over the course of the next year. You should see your final results in a year.

Elevation

To reduce swelling and bruising, it’s essential to keep your head elevated during the initial recovery time. Sleep on your back with your head propped up on a couple of pillows. If you tend to roll over to your side during sleep, consider sleeping in a recliner for a few nights.

Activities

You’ll have some restrictions on your activities to avoid disturbing the bones and cartilage in your nose. The swelling in the nose will cause you to feel congested. However, it’s crucial to avoid blowing your nose. Instead, your plastic surgeon might recommend using a saline nasal spray to improve the sensation. You’ll also need to avoid anything that places pressure on your nose. This includes wearing glasses and rubbing your nose.

Nutrition

After any surgery, it’s important to give your body the nutrients it needs to support healing. Eat plenty of lean proteins, vegetables, and fruits. Drink water instead of sugary beverages.
